Gotthard Tunnel Delays
On the 10.08.2023, a freight train travelled through the Gotthard Tunnel, Switzerland was derailed at the Faido Interchange.Several wagons were derailed, destroying the gauge changing device at the multifunction station, which separates the two tubes of the tunnel.Until the damage suffered is repaired no train can use the base tunnel for safety reasons. The Swiss Railway Infrastructure Manager, SBB Infra, has informed carriers that the railway line repair of the Gotthard Tunnel (GBT) is not yet been complete and that the tunnel will not reopen until 23:59pm on 22.08.2023.As it stands, carriers have advised that 150 metres of track still need to be cleared of debris, repaired and safety systems that suffered major failures and are still being tested.Due to this incident the railway line which connects the main routes from and to Italy has been severely impacted and the train schedule is being revised which will affect transit times.Neptune are liaising closely with our suppliers to ensure alternative routings are secured for traffic. We will continue to monitor the situation and advise any further updates once received. If you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact us.For further information please visit the following links:https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-08-10/train-derails-in-swiss-gotthard-tunnel-halts-key-freight-route?leadSource=uverify%20wallhttps://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/business/broken-wheel-likely-cause-of-gothard-tunnel-derailment/48733282https://www.railtech.com/rolling-stock/2023/08/11/gotthard-tunnel-closed-until-16-august-due-to-freight-train-derailment/
